Technical Consulting & Architecture

Technical consulting is most valuable before the expensive decisions are made — which stack, whether to build or buy, whether the architecture will survive the next stage of growth. Appex Technology provides architecture reviews, stack selection, and fractional engineering leadership for teams that need senior technical judgement without hiring a full-time CTO.

What you get

What we actually deliver

  • Architecture reviewAn assessment of your current system: what will hold, what will not, and what to address in what order.
  • Stack and platform selectionA recommendation with the trade-offs stated plainly, including what you give up by choosing it.
  • Build-vs-buy analysisTotal cost of ownership over a realistic horizon rather than a comparison of sticker prices.
  • Vendor and proposal reviewAn independent read on a quote or a partner’s technical approach before you commit.
  • Fractional leadershipOngoing senior involvement — code review, hiring input, roadmap and architecture decisions.
Who it’s for

A good fit if…

  • Founders choosing a stack or evaluating a development partner’s proposal
  • Businesses weighing build, buy, or customize on a significant investment
  • Teams whose system is slowing down and unsure whether to fix or replace it
  • Companies needing technical leadership at less than full-time
How it works

From first call to handover

  1. Step 01

    Understand the business first

The right technical answer depends on where the business is going, not only on the code.

  2. Step 02

    Review what exists

Codebase, infrastructure, and process, plus conversations with the people running it day to day.

  3. Step 03

    Report with priorities

Written findings ordered by impact, separating what is urgent from what is merely imperfect.

  4. Step 04

    Stay available

Follow-up as decisions land, or an ongoing arrangement where that is more useful.

FAQ

Technical Consulting & Architecture — common questions

When is a fractional CTO the right fit?+
When decisions carry real technical risk but the volume does not justify a full-time senior hire — typically pre-first-engineering-hire, or with a small team lacking an architecture-level voice. It stops fitting once decision-making is continuous, at which point hiring is the better answer and we will say so.
Will you review another vendor’s proposal?+
Yes, and it is some of the highest-leverage work we do. An independent review before signing tends to cost a fraction of what discovering the problem mid-build does. We are equally willing to tell you the proposal is sound.
Should we rebuild or fix our existing system?+
Rebuilds are chosen far more often than they are justified. Incremental modernisation is usually cheaper and much less risky, because a rebuild restarts the clock on every bug already fixed. Rebuilding is warranted when the foundation genuinely cannot support where the business is going — which a review can establish either way.
Do you only recommend things you would build?+
No, and that would make the advice worthless. Recommending an existing product, another vendor, or doing nothing yet are all common outcomes. The most useful engineering advice is frequently "do not build this yet."
What does a consulting engagement look like?+
Anything from a single architecture review with a written report to an ongoing fractional arrangement. Scope is agreed up front with a fixed price, same as our build work. Describe the decision you are facing through the contact form and we will propose a shape that fits.
