AppexTECHNOLOGY

Custom software for e-commerce & retail

E-commerce becomes a custom software problem at the point where the product or fulfilment model stops matching what hosted platforms assume. Appex Technology builds headless storefronts, subscription commerce, and inventory and fulfilment integrations for retail and DTC brands — with performance treated as a conversion requirement, because for consumer traffic it is one.

The problem

What tends to get in the way

Platform fees scale with success

Transaction percentages and app subscriptions grow with revenue rather than with the value delivered.

Templates constrain the experience

Differentiated merchandising or configuration is frequently the thing a hosted theme cannot express.

Page speed costs revenue

App and script bloat slows storefronts, and bounce rate follows load time closely.

Inventory lives in several places

Storefront, warehouse, and accounting each hold a slightly different count.

What we build

Systems built for this sector

  • Headless storefrontsCustom front ends on a commerce backend, so the experience is not bounded by a theme.
  • Subscription commerceRecurring orders, trials, proration, and dunning handled properly at the edges.
  • Product configuratorsComplex, made-to-order, or bundled products that standard catalogues cannot model.
  • Inventory and fulfilmentIntegrations with warehouse, 3PL, and shipping providers so stock counts agree.
  • B2B wholesaleAccount pricing, quotes, and purchase-order flows alongside the consumer storefront.
What shapes the build

Constraints we design around

These shape architecture from the start. Retrofitting them later is consistently more expensive than designing for them up front.

  • PCI scope, kept minimal by leaving card handling with the processor
  • Sales tax and VAT calculation across the jurisdictions you sell into
  • Consumer data and privacy obligations, including cookie consent where applicable
  • Accessibility, which is both a legal exposure and a conversion factor
  • Peak-season load, which needs planning before the season rather than during it

FAQ

E-commerce & Retail — common questions

Should we move off Shopify?+
Not automatically. Shopify is genuinely good for standard retail, and leaving it has real costs. Moving makes sense when your product model does not fit its catalogue, when subscription or bundling logic exceeds what apps can do, when transaction and app fees at your volume have overtaken build cost, or when the storefront experience is itself part of your differentiation. Otherwise staying is the better call, and we will tell you that.
What is headless commerce?+
Separating the storefront from the commerce backend: the backend handles catalogue, cart, orders, and payments through an API, while the front end is fully custom. You gain complete control over experience and performance, at the cost of needing developers for front-end changes rather than editing a theme.
Can you handle subscriptions?+
Yes. The straightforward part is charging on a schedule; the real work is at the edges — trials, upgrades and proration, pauses, failed-payment dunning, and refunds. We design those cases explicitly, because they are where subscription systems usually break.
How do you keep inventory accurate across systems?+
By deciding which system owns stock counts and syncing outward from it, rather than letting several systems each hold their own number. Most inventory drift is an unresolved ownership question rather than a technical failure.
Does site speed really affect sales?+
For consumer traffic, materially — load time correlates strongly with bounce and conversion, and Core Web Vitals also feed search ranking. We treat performance as a build constraint rather than a later optimisation pass, since retrofitting it is much more expensive.
