Salesforce Alternatives: Managed, Open-Source, and Custom CRMs Compared

The main alternatives to Salesforce fall into three groups: managed CRMs that are simpler and often cheaper (HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM), open-source CRMs you can self-host with no per-seat fees (Twenty, EspoCRM), and a custom CRM built around your own process. Salesforce Sales Cloud lists from $25 to $550 per user per month. The right alternative depends mostly on team size, how standard your sales process is, and whether per-seat cost or data ownership matters to you.

Prices are vendor list prices as of September 2026 — see sources below. Updated .

How to judge the options

  • Fit to your process — can it model your records and pipeline without workarounds?
  • Total cost over three years, including how the bill grows with headcount
  • Who owns the data and how hard it is to leave
  • Integrations with your email, billing, support, and marketing tools
  • Who will administer it — an admin, a partner, or nobody

FAQ

Salesforce alternatives — common questions

What is the best alternative to Salesforce?+
There isn’t one best option. HubSpot suits teams wanting an all-in-one suite, Pipedrive suits small pipeline-focused teams, Zoho CRM suits budget-conscious teams, Twenty and EspoCRM suit teams that want to self-host without per-seat fees, and a custom CRM suits businesses with a genuinely unique process.
Is there a free alternative to Salesforce?+
Yes. Twenty and EspoCRM are open source and free to self-host — you pay only for hosting. HubSpot and Zoho CRM also have free plans for very small teams (2 and 3 users respectively).
Why do companies leave Salesforce?+
Common reasons are cost that grows with every seat, complexity that needs a dedicated admin, and processes that require heavy customization. Very large sales organizations often stay because of its depth and ecosystem.
Is a custom CRM better than Salesforce?+
Only when your process is unusual enough that a general CRM forces constant workarounds, or when per-seat costs are significant. For standard sales pipelines, a managed or open-source CRM is usually the better value.
